With crowdsourced investing, a few hundred Rands can go a long way

Crowd investments can be an excellent way to grow your money.

As an example, if you save R100 a month towards a savings goal for your newborn (increasing this amount by 6% every year) and invest it in a fund that provides a return of inflation plus 5% per year, you can expect to have over R140 000 when your child turns 21.

Now, if you use crowdfunding to get grandparents and aunts and uncles to contribute, that amount increases significantly.

Assuming there's an extra four contributions of R200 each on the child's birthday and over the festive season, (R1600 extra each year) that grows by 6% a year, the amount available to your child when they turn 21 is R300 000.

That's three times as much as the amount you would have saved on your own.
